HOW TO FORTIFY YOUR CHECKS AGAINST CHECK FRAUD
Do not use pre-printed check stock. As recommended by the FBI in a recent theft investigation, best practice is to use check stock without the MICR and apply the MICR line when the check is printed on a secure MICR check printer. Not all MICR check printers are the same. SourceTechnologies check printers are used by more financial institutions than any other brand.
Only use a printer that has been engineered specifically for MICR printing that offers:
- Optimized fuser temperature – enhanced toner fusion to prevent fraud from chemical alteration/washing and check scraping
- Password capable to protect MICR fonts and signatures
- On-demand security features added to check at time of print to prevent alterations and duplication
- Ability to realign MICR line within millimeters. Routine software/firmware updates can cause the MICR line to become misaligned, only a printer modified for MICR can reposition the MICR line

MICR Toner Detection- a Secure MICR printer will notify the user if there is non-MICR toner inserted in the printer, preventing checks from printing without MICR and avoiding bank fines. Low Toner Warning and Auto Stop- a Secure MICR printer will not print if there is not enough toner to satisfy ANSI/ABA requirements. Think of the gray scaling you get in the background when you get to the end of life of your standard toner, this is not conducive with check printing and will cause rejected checks and bank fines. Audit Trails- Creates user-defined reports of check printing activity for auditing purposes. Datastream Tray Protection- keeps regular office documents from being printed on check stock. Reduces the number of re-prints and the waste of check stock.
Security benefits of moving to a secure MICR Check Printer solution
Fuser & Transfer Voltage optimized for MICR toner- All printer OEMs are on a mission to reduce the footprint of their printers with that comes reducing the fuser temperature and transfer voltage which is not conducive with MICR printing. MICR is a soft toner that requires a high temperature to ensure proper adhesion. Without proper adhesion it is easy to scrape or pick the toner from the check and some instances the toner curls up off the check stock. Secure Numeric Font- This is an additional layer of security applied at the time of print. The secure numeric font is a unique Sourcetech designed font that is very difficult to alter. It offers a special background and very small text & numeric print embedded in the amount line of the check to prevent alteration. Microprint Font- Additional layer of security added at the time of print that minimizes the risk of fraud. Password Protection- Prevents unauthorized access to MICR and Secure fonts without proper passwords. DES Encryption/Decryption- One of the highest levels of security available. Decrypts the print data stream, protecting it while it is being transmitted to the printer. Front Panel Security Lock- User must enter an 8-digit combination to release the print job. Set Copies to 1- When the printer receives a MICR print job the PCL setting tells the printer to print the job only once preventing multiple copies of a check from being produced. Auto Jam Recovery Disabled- The Jam Recovery feature within the printer is disabled during MICR printing preventing multiple copies of a check from being printed when a jam occurs.
