Problem #1: Toner does not stick to the page or smears Solutions: The laser printer fuser assembly may be defective or it’s at the end of its life. The solution is to replace the fuser. The laser printer fuser is considered a consumable and can be replaced simply by referring to the owner’s manual. Or, you may have a defective toner cartridge. Simply replace the cartridge and see if this fixes the problem. Also, toner may have spilled into the printer and may just need to be cleaned out.

Problem #2: Paper Jams. Solutions: This can be caused by dust, grime or dirt has made its way into the printer. Other causes could be worn laser printer pickup tires or worn feed tires. Paper dust may also be the culprit.  Paper dust can coat the rubber feed components and inhibit traction to pull the paper.  Periodically clean the laser printer and check the user’s manual to make sure that the paper being used is recommended by the manufacturer. If the paper you are using is too light or too heavy, paper jams can occur.

Problem #3: Part of or the entire printed page is faded. Solutions: There are usually three conditions that cause this problem. The laser printer is either low in toner, the density is set too low, or the Eco-mode may be turned on. Remove the toner cartridge and shake it. This will redistribute the toner and often will temporarily solve the problem. If shaking the toner gently does not resolve the issue, you may have a dirty charge wire.  The charge wire charges the drum unit so it can accept the toner.  Review your user manual to see how to clean the laser printer charge wire.

Problem #4: Ghosting (This is an issue when image prints correctly, but a much lighter copy also prints elsewhere).Solutions: This “ghosting” phenomenon is usually caused by a defective or worn drum.  Try installing a new imaging unit.  Your laser printer relies on a drum cleaning blade that may be worn or the drum surface is worn and prevents the laser printer cleaning blade to wipe the drum surface clean between print jobs.

Problem #5: Printer picks up multiple pages from the feed tray instead of a single sheet. Solutions: The paper feed separation pad on your laser printer may be worn.  The separation pad prevents multiple sheets from feeding at the same time.  Cleaning the separation pad with denatured alcohol may help.  The laser printer separation pad can also get covered in paper dust over time causing it to malfunction.  Another possible cause of multiple sheets feeding may be due to your paper being “wet”.  If your paper has been in the laser printer for a long time or is not stored in a sealed package, it may have absorbed humidity and causes the pages to stick together. Try fanning the paper or install fresh printer paper.
