What is Digital Signage Anyway?

Digital signage is the use of screens to advertise and market brands instead of billboards and posters. As digital signage gets cheaper, it’s also being used by businesses to decorate their office environments and to conduct conferences in workplaces.

Technologies Used In Digital Signage

Digital signage technologies have come a long way. Only a few years ago, signage screens were made from huge(compared to pixels) LED bulbs that gave a horrible pixel density of about 5 pixels per inch (PPI). For comparison, Samsung’s LED screens have a PPI of more than 150, while iPhones have a PPI in the ballpark of 450.

Modern digital signage uses IPS LCDs, OLEDs, and Quantum Dot LEDs to bring the brightest and most vibrant visuals to signage. These technologies are also more energy-efficient and cheaper to make.

IPS LCDs are superior to traditional LCDs as they can offer localized dimming and reduced cross-talk, giving them the same visual quality as LEDs at a lower price. OLEDs use organic diodes to give a wider range of saturated colors with lower energy use. Samsung’s Quantum Dot LEDs are the latest innovation in screens, with the highest contrast found on any screen.

Energy Efficiency of Digital Signage

Screens used to use a lot of energy only to waste most of it as heat. However, the energy used in digital signage has been consistently decreasing. Screens today have minimal energy waste, and most of the input is used to process the picture and illuminate the screen.

If we are to compare, traditional signage also uses energy to illuminate the sign. The energy used by digital signage is currently higher than traditional signage, but it may not stay that way for long. Researchers are working on screens that emit light only in one direction. These directional screens will only allow the screen to be viewed from certain angles and limit light wasted on unwanted angles (no one looks at a signboard from above, for example.)

Screens are also reusable, while traditional signage has to be replaced for each advertisement, resulting in waste.

How Small Businesses Can Also Use Digital Signage

Digital signage has mostly been only used by mega-corporations and by smaller businesses on rent to show their advertisement for a limited period. This was because digital signage used to be too expensive and fairly difficult to install. That’s not the case anymore.

At Axis Business Technologies, we partner with some of the biggest names in digital signage, such as Samsung and Panasonic, and bring digital signage to all businesses. We set up digital signage screens for small businesses all over Southern Colorado, allowing you to adapt the technology hassle-free. We also offer print management software solutions and commercial copiers, scanners and best printer for small business.
