Traditional signage has been around for more than a millennia, ever since printing was first invented in China. Digital signage is the new kid on the block. Should you switch to digital signage in 2022, or should you stick to paper? Let’s find out in this head-to-head comparison.
1. Range of Applications of Traditional Signage vs. Digital Signage
Traditional signage can be used on billboards, signboards, posters, and virtually anywhere. It can be printed large enough to cover an entire wall or small enough to make a pamphlet. The obvious limitation of traditional signage (unless you’re from Hogwarts) is that it can only display static images.
Digital signage costs more, which limits where it can be placed. You can’t paste LEDs screens in alleyways and distribute iPads with your advertisement playing. However, digital signage can display motion graphics and any dynamic media.
As a bonus, if you make digital advertisements for your screens, you can also share that via other digital means, such as your social media. This makes up for pamphlets, at least, giving digital a win in this round.
Winner: Digital Signage
2. Energy Efficiency of Traditional Signage vs. Digital Signage
Before we state the obvious, it’s important to note that traditional signage also uses energy for printing and lighting. Digital signage has been consistently getting more energy efficient.
Future technologies such as directional screens (screens that only emit light in a specified direction) may one day make digital signage even more energy-efficient than traditional signage.
Another promising technology is the one used in Amazon Kindle called Electric Paper. These screens can be lit with just light on regular paper, but the screen itself doesn’t use any energy when it’s static. This technology hasn’t yet been developed for signage, but in theory, it is more energy-efficient than making and printing paper for signage.
However, in 2022, digital signage still uses more energy than traditional signage, giving it the win in this round.
Winner: Traditional Signage
3. Environmental Impact of Traditional Signage vs. Digital Signage
Paper is one of the largest polluters in the world. It accounts for 26% of all waste at landfills. Consumers in the US use 30% of the world’s paper products, while we only account for 5% of the global population. Paper is made from trees, which harms the planet’s ability to lower CO2 in the environment. It’s beyond doubt that the sooner we replace paper with other digital technologies, the better it is for our planet.
Digital signage can be the solution. A single-screen can show unlimited adverts and save tons of paper in its lifetime, making digital signage the more environmentally conscious choice in 2022.
